About

Dr Rauf earned his MBBS degree from Calicut Medical College and started practising as a general physician in Calicut in the late 70s. He was successful in establishing himself and building a reputation as a competent and trustworthy professional.

He left Calicut to pursue MD in chest diseases from the prestigious Delhi University. On completion of the course, he returned to Calicut and, in 1981, joined Chest Hospital, Calicut, which specializes in chest diseases.

He established the Allergy and Asthma Center at the Chest Hospital. The pollen calendar he prepared, based on a study of air-borne fungal spores and pollen in the city of Calicut (1990–93) is still being used as a guide to refer to allergen producing pollen.

Understanding the nuances of Pulmonology, he paid more attention to research on the subject and successfully introduced Interventional Pulmonology to the Centre. The hospital, under his guidance, runs a computerized pulmonary function testing lab.

His focus on the comparatively new subject of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea led to the setting up of a Sleep Lab in the hospital, to treat sleep disorders. Dr. Rauf also heads the critical care unit of the hospital.

Chest Hospital is accredited to the National Board of Examinations under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, for Post-Graduate training in Respiratory Medicine (DNB). Dr. Rauf is the guide for the students.

In 2018, on Dr. Rauf’s initiative, Chest Hospital installed an Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) facility—a path-breaking technique of conducting an ultrasound along with a bronchoscope, as well as the flexi-rigid thoracoscopy, a successful alternative to the conventional rigid thoracoscopy.

Dr. Rauf’s book, Asthma, Allergy, was published by Kerala Basha Institute; he has co-authored many research articles on the subject for various medical journals.

A rarity among present-day doctors, Dr. Rauf spends unusually long hours in the hospital catering to the needs of patients and interacting with his juniors, nursing and paramedical staff. His warmth and winning smile, staunch commitment and dedication to the profession, along with his expertise in the field makes Dr. Rauf very popular among patients. Dr. Rauf engages in a lot of charitable and social work for the poor and the needy.
