19th DNB Awards Given: Dr. KP Nimisha Bags Gold Medal in Pulmonary Medicine
Dr. K.P. Nimisha, DNB resident from Chest Hospital Calicut who bagged the Gold Medal in Pulmonary Medicine, received the award during the 19th Convocation of National Board of Examinations, held in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on 21 September 2018. Out of the 7 awardees in pulmonary medicine, for the years 2013 -2017, Dr. Nimisha received the medal for the year 2016.
Dr. Nimisha, who hails from Telicherry, Kerala did her MBBS from Madras Medical College and DTCD from Calicut Medical College. “She was a studious, hardworking and meritorious student, and really deserves the recognition”, says Dr. CP Rauf MD, the DNB coordinator for Pulmonary Medicine at Chest Hospital.
Addressing the young doctors who were graduating as the ‘Diplomates of the National Board’, the Vice President of India Shri Venkaiah Naidu remarked that they were about to undertake a fascinating voyage that would offer them rewards of recognition, service and personal fulfilment, while helping them improve the quality of human lives. He extolled the objectivity, thoroughness and the rigour of the examination process of the National Board of Exams, and said that the graduates who acquire the DNB qualification are as good, if not better than those who acquire MD, MS, DM and other equivalent degrees.
National Board of Examination’s award for pulmonary medicine – M. Santhosham Gold Medal is constituted in the name of Dr. Mathuram Santhosham, a renowned tuberculosis specialist, who established the first privately funded sanatorium in South India on the outskirts of Madras and had a busy pulmonology practise at Lung Clinic in Egmore. The award was conferred to Dr. Nimisha by The Ministers of State for Health & Family Welfare, Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey.
Before closing his address, the Vice President raised three problems that deserved the undivided attention of Healthcare professionals. He highlighted the urban-rural divide and pointed out that the rural India suffered from a lack of access to medical facilities, especially specialist care. He encouraged the young doctors who are at the prime of their career to dedicate themselves to serve the un-served and reach the un-reachable rural population and to ensure equity in access to health care facilities.
