Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is a relatively common condition where the wall of the throat, relax and narrow during sleep, interrupting normal breathing. It is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction that occur during sleep, usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. This leads to regularly interrupted sleep, which can make you tired during the day. In the past, this was known as Pickwickian Syndrome because the character, Joe, the fat boy, in Charles Dickens Pickwick Papers had typical features with snoring, obesity, sleepiness and dropsy.
Sleep Apnoea is a treatable condition, and there are a variety of treatments options that can reduce the symptoms. But, the syndrome was never considered as an illness here, and was believed to be prevalent only in the West.
Proving it wrong, in the year 1998, a break-through experiment was conducted in Chest Hospital, Calicut, by establishing a diagnostic centre for treating sleep disorders under the leadership of three doctors - Dr. CP Rauf MD, Dr. Hareesh Menon MD and Dr. Suresh Kumar DNB.
The centre undertook detailed study on patients and in-depth research on the subject, diagnosed and treated patients, effectively.
In line with these pioneers, many started experimenting with sleep disorders and started setting up sleep centres in various hospitals much later. Amidst the mushrooming growth of the sleep centres, Chest Hospital continues to be a pioneer in this specialty treatment.
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea syndrome is an important medical disorder that warrants active investigation by means of a clinical evaluation and Polysomnographic sleep studies.
Treatment is essential, not only to improve the symptoms that include sleepiness, but also to prevent the development of Cardiovascular and Neurological complications.
Effective treatments exist that include behavioral, medical and surgical means.
Get treated..., result will be dramatic improvements in patient's well-being.
