Established in the year 1974, Chest Hospital in Calicut was the first-of-its-kind private-sector venture in the field of Tuberculosis and Chest diseases in the state of Kerala. Fulfilling the vision of the late Dr. M.A. Abdulla, the founder of the hospital and a veteran in the field of TB and Chest diseases, the hospital has grown manifold and continues to serve the poor, the needy and the middle class of society.

This multi-specialty hospital, with a vast pool of talented and eminent specialist doctors, is supported by a team of experienced and dedicated support staff. The hospital is known for its Department of Chest diseases and Center for Asthma & Allergy headed by Dr. C.P. Rauf MD. With over-40 years’ expertise in the field, he efficaciously leads the Critical Care Unit, Interventional Pulmonology, Sleep Lab, and the Pulmonary Function Lab as well.

In 1990, the hospital set up a Diabetes Hospital with modern amenities, under the stewardship of Dr. M.A. Moideen MD. Calicut ENT— the department catering to the patients’ ENT issues, under Dr. V K Mohammed Zubair started functioning in the year 1995, followed by a Radiology department under Dr. M. A. Femina with ultrasonography and CT Scan facilities. Thoracic surgery unit under Dr. Naseer Yussaf came into existence during same period.

Chest Hospital continues to draw inspiration from the founder, Dr. M.A. Abdulla’s, vision - to make available standard medical care for the poor and the middle-income group, and to work as a referral Centre for diagnostic and therapeutic work for Chest diseases.

Chest Hospital is a multi-specialty hospital, catering to patients with Chest diseases, Cardio-vascular diseases, Diabetes and many other medical emergencies. The hospital opened its doors on June 1, 1974. Established by the late Dr. M.A Abdulla, MBBS TDD, the hospital has, under his guidance, conquered new heights in medical excellence.

Dr. MA Abdulla, the first Chief and Medical Superintendent of the hospital, continued to hold office till his demise on 26th July 2015. He graduated from Madras Medical College and specialized in respiratory diseases at the Tuberculosis Hospital, Thambaram, Madras, in 1955 and later joined the Kerala Government Medical College Services. A dedicated leader of Muslim Educational Society, Dr. Abdulla’s commitment has made revolutionary changes in the progress of Muslims of Malabar in the field of education.

The hospital has, at present, several departments, including Pulmonary Medicine, Tuberculosis, Asthma and Respiratory Allergy, Thoracic Surgery, Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery, Keyhole Surgery, Intensive Respiratory Care Unit, Sleep Laboratory etc. The team of doctors are reputed specialists in their respective fields and are well-supported by its efficient nursing and paramedical staff. All departments are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and have incorporated the latest technologies in the medical field.

Chest hospital, in the year 2018 has installed Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) facility - the path breaking technique of ultrasound along with bronchoscope to visualize airway wall and structures adjacent to it.

This highly effective and low risk technique of EBUS is being successfully practiced by the specialists here to identify lung cancer and to evaluate Mediastinal Lymphadenopathy and Lung tumours which are not visible through Video Bronchoscope.

The pulmonologists in the hospital have adapted to Flexi rigid Thoracoscope as an alternative to the conventional rigid Thoracoscopes and thereby have made themselves competent enough in diagnosing unidentified Pleural effusions.

To address the concern of increasing number of Diabetic patients, especially, a majority, approaching with Diabetic foot issue, we have initiated recently a dedicated centre for podiatry in the hospital.

Big, as well as mini operation theatres in Chest, is well equipped to do surgeries. We have surgeons specialized in keyhole surgeries and a reputed Cardiothoracic surgeon with unblemished track records and innumerable success stories.

Our dialysis unit is sound with technical expertise and addresses the patient’s concerns without fail. A Full-fledged Intensive care unit, with ventilator facilities, 24 hours functional Emergency department, pharmacy and lab are other unique feature of Chest Hospital.

From the year 2006 to 2018, Chest Hospital has the privilege of successfully imparting Post-Graduate training in Respiratory Medicine (DNB, Respiratory Medicine) for 25 students as part of its accreditation to National Board of Examinations under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India.
